New rebel of the art world- who is Jonathan Horowitz?

Zdjęcie autora: Amanda OrzechowskaAmanda Orzechowska

In the recent years, Jonathan Horowitz has become a hot name in the contemporary political art. He is well known for his examining issues of the modern world in a bold and original way. What I love about him is that talking about things like politics, celebrity, cinema, war, and consumerism his works always have a good dose of humour and irony. This kind of laid back attitude always leaves me positive after going to his shows despite the fact that afterwards I reflect on my position and role in the modern society. But enough of the fangirl writing. Let's start from the beginning.

Horowitz was born in 1966. Currently he is based in New York (hell yeah, the heart of consumcionism, mass culture and the widely understood mass culture, what definitely inspires him everyday). He graduated in 1987 Philosophy from Wesleyan University what I believe gives him an interesting and critical perspective. He started playing with different art forms, such as video, sculpture, sound installation, and photography in the 1990s and in 1998 he had his first solo exhibition. Since then, he had 31 exhibitions of which the latest one is currently at Sadie Coles in London (until 6th of April in Kingly Street unit).

When I did an online search of Jonathan (low-key tried to stalk his Facebook) I have realised that he is not present on any social media at all. Nor as an artist not privately (however this one I can't guarantee, maybe he goes by a fake name). The only official page, which is dedicated to his works is his official website (http://jonathanhorowitz.us/). What is extremely interesting is that when you go to the page, the first thing that pops up is a question 'Are you registered to vote?' and a link to the official American government website (https://vote.gov/). Horowitz not only comments . If you're interested in viewing his newest exhibition 'Pre-Fall 2017'at Sadie Coles, here is a little recommendation from me: get familiar some of Jonathan's earlier works (you can find pictures and installation viewes on his official website linked above). Occupy Greenwich and Mr. Carter and Diet Cola for Men have a particular cultural and political context, which will allow you to better understand Horowitz's latest exhibition and perceive it as an essential element of his work. I'm also attaching some of his art in the gallery below
